Vitamin D: The Defender against Damage

Vitamin D: The Defender against Damage

There are 13 essential vitamins that our body requires for optimal health, and vitamin D is one of them! When we hear of vitamin D, we often envisage soaking up the sun with a cocktail in hand to get a good hit of this essential vitamin, but there’s so much more to vitamin D than meets the eye and it can be a great additive to your skincare routine.

What are the benefits of vitamin D?

Vitamin D is supreme for heart health, stabilising our mood and strengthening our bones, but not everybody knows that this powerful antioxidant also has some incredible benefits for our skin too! Low levels of Vitamin D can affect our immune system and hormone regulation, leading to premature ageing and acne and causing the skin to become thin and fragile. Introducing a vitamin D product into your life can:
  • Protect our DNA and defending against free radical damage.
  • Decrease oxidative stress to the skin and ward off signs of ageing, including fine lines & wrinkles.
  • Reduce inflammation, particularly caused by psoriasis and eczema.
  • Support the fundamental structure and health of the skin.
  • Play a crucial role in calcium absorption and normal cell division, growth & repair.
  • Help to strengthen elastin and maintain overall skin health.

But can’t I just get vitamin D from the sun?

Statistics say that up to 90% of your body’s requirement for vitamin D can be sourced naturally from the sun, so you’re probably wondering why experts are telling us to stay out of the sun when a little bit of exposure can give us what we need?

Unfortunately, sourcing vitamin D from sun exposure means subjecting your skin to harmful UV damage, meaning potentially deadly skin cancers, accelerated ageing and photodamage. It’s difficult to balance absorption of vitamin D with these contradictory and often harmful elements, and it can also be very hard to predict how much sun exposure is needed to top up your vitamin D levels naturally.

The other major concern is that many of these countries around the world, including Australia, face a big increase in vitamin D deficiencies during the winter months when we can’t naturally get enough sun exposure. It’s estimated that around 1 in 2 people in Europe, the USA and Asia are deficient in vitamin D at some stage in their life, and 1 in 4 Australians have a mild-severe deficiency.
The sun isn’t the only way of producing vitamin D, so this is why many experts recommend taking an additional supplementation of vitamin D either orally or topically. Foods such as mushrooms, salmon and milk by-products are all acceptable sources of Vitamin D, but for the skin I have a little secret weapon which will tackle all of your skin’s vitamin D needs…

My product of choice

This brings me to introduce you to our beloved Societé Vitamin D Complex, a luxurious skin care product that we’ve recently added to the Clinica Lase range. We can’t even really call this a serum or a moisturiser because it really is its own product altogether. There is a creamy/buttery consistency that slots in beautifully with any routine and is very simple and easy to use. It contains vitamins D3 (Cholecalciferol if we’re being scientific), C, E, F Hyaluronic Acid AND Collagen Peptides. Oh and last but not least, Pore-Perfecting Technology! All skins can benefit from this product and all you need is a single pump on top of your current serum/moisturiser and voila - you’re on your way to soft, strong, nourished, glowy skin.

Final thoughts

Now while one skin product won’t beat a complete vitamin D deficiency, it will certainly help in the fight against the skin-related issues that can often occur with a deficiency, as well as priming and protecting your skin against the damaging elements of the environment around us. We’ve got a good feeling that we’re going to be seeing more vitamin D based products in the cosmeceutical world and we’re really excited about it!
