Common Questions About Acne Scarring

Acne can cause scarring in some people due to a variety of factors.

Causes:

  • Inflammation for an extended period of time.
  • Picking
  • Squeezing
  • Popping
  • Drying the skin out too much
  • Not treating acne when it begins
  • Genetics

Acne scarring can be pink/red (post inflammatory erythema) and some will be brown (Post inflammatory hyperpigmentation) in colour or they may have no colour.

There are different types of acne scarring based on the scars shape.

  • Icepick - narrow, deep scars.
  • Rolling - wide, with a sloping edge. Similar to an upside down hill.
  • Boxcar - wide, round and have distinct edges.
  • Keloid - this will grow taller and larger than the lesion was.
  • Hypertrophic - unraised and the same shape as the lesion was.

Generally the colour of scarring (Post inflammatory hyperpigmentation and/or Post inflammatory erythema) will fade over time, this can take several months to a year, however it will differ between each person.

The depth of scars will not change on their own.
