Potenza RF vs Morpheus8: Which is better?

Potenza RF vs Morpheus8: Which is better?

On the surface, it may seem that they offer the same benefits, but are Potenza RF and Morpheus8 the same? In this blog, we explain how Potenza and Morpheus are different and why you may choose one over the other.

How RF Microneedling Works

Potenza and Morpheus are both RF (radiofrequency) microneedling devices. RF microneedling is a cutting edge treatment that uses approximately 25-40 needles to create tiny microscopic wounds to the skin, allowing for our cells to regenerate and to kick start the production of collagen.  It’s a treatment for anyone wanting to see quick and wow factor results for when they have concerns with wrinkles, sagging, and acne scarring.

How RF Microneedling is Different from Traditional Microneedling

Traditional microneedling is also a great option for rejuvenation, fine lines and acne scarring, but it can sometimes take a little longer to see results. RF microneedling just gives that little more in the way of tone, texture and better collagen and elastin production, in usually a shorter space of time.

Microneedling alone is exactly that. A cartridge containing stainless steel needles is used to create microscopic wounds to the dermal layers of the skin, causing the cells to regenerate. It is usually performed with a pen resembling an electric toothbrush with a built in motor, which causes the small needles to glide over the surface while oscillating and creates roughly a thousand micro punctures per second.

RF microneedling is a full machine device that uses a similar cartridge containing insulated and semi insulated needles, except we use a pedal to create a gentle stamping technique over the skin. The RF (which stands for radiofrequency), uses low level electromagnetic waves to create heat which emits through the very tip of the needles.

So not only do we get the mechanical injury of the needles themselves, we also have the RF working hard at the same time. With this extra bonus and advantage, we can see more tightening of the collagen and elastin fibers, improved scarring, tighter pores and a plumper appearance and not to mention faster healing time.

Key Features of Potenza RF

Adjustable Needles for Customised Treatments

One advantage of Potenza is that it that has 5 different tips to fully customise the treatment to your skin concerns and skin type. These tips can vary from 16 needles up to 49 per cartridge.

For example, Potenza has a unique Tiger tip which has a semi insulated part of the needle to get extra tissue penetration and coverage in a single pass. This is a great option for the jowls and neck area for additional skin tightening.

Potenza also has the i49 tip, which is generally used for deeper acne scars which require more impact as well as thicker skinned areas such as the tummy for skin laxity and stretch marks.

Combined Monopolar and Bipolar RF Modes

Having a combination of monopolar and bipolar RF modes is what really sets Potenza apart from the other RF devices. Having both means that deeper wrinkles and scarring can be targeted at the same time as tightening and lifting the skin.

These modes can be used alone or together in one session, although more often than not we combine them, it really just depends on the patient and their skin type. These two modes can be further customised by selecting either 1 or 2 mega hertz.

Conditions Potenza RF Can Treat

We recommend Potenza is for anyone looking to enhance their natural glow, smooth and tighten the skin and pores through the power of RF remodelling, break down stubborn acne scar tissue, diminish stretch marks and tighten laxity on the body.

Key Features of Morpheus8

Deep Fractional Treatment that Reaches the Subdermal Layers

Morpheus8 is also RF microneedling device that works on targeting collagen and elastin fibres in the sub dermal layers to improve lines and wrinkles. Much like Potenza, Morpheus can give a more youthful, smoother appearance to the skin.

Ability to Remodel Collagen and Fat

There are studies on both devices to prove they can both effectively remodel collagen but with the option of delivering high temperatures of RF, Morpheus8 is able to break down fat and work effectively on areas with cellulite too!

Conditions Morpheus8 Can Treat

Morpheus8 is designed to treat fine lines and wrinkles, rejuvenation, open pores, acne marks and scars, stretch marks and pockets of fat.

Comparing Potenza RF vs Morpheus8

When looking at both devices from a distance, you're probably wondering if there is any difference between Potenza and Morpheus8.

The biggest distinction is that Potenza has four modes of RF, whereas Morpheus8 has just one, being bipolar. Potenza has more customisable options with various tips and and modes, allowing for a deeper treatment overall. Bipolar alone is working more superficially.

Depth of Penetration

Potenza depths range from .5mm - 4mm, while Morpheus8 ranges from 1mm -8mm. You wouldn't typically go beyond 4mm unless you were aiming to remove stubborn fat pockets.

Treatment Areas and Versatility

Both devices can be used on the face, neck, and body however, Potenza is more versatile having the option of delivering the RF at 1 or 2 megahertz as well as a single insulated needle tip for acne treatment and an infusion tip for the delivery of topical injectable grade serums.

Recovery Time

Recovery time for any RF with microneedling treatment can range anywhere from 2-7 days. It is expected that you will experience a sensation that resembles sunburn with redness for the first 1-2 days with light swelling. A slight crusting and dryness can present on the surface of your skin from where the tiny needles have been, this usually resolves within 7-10 days and it's not very visible unless you are looking closely . It's important to remember that collagen remodelling on the neck and body has a slightly longer healing time.

Procedure & Comfort

A topical numbing cream is often applied before RF microneedling. Most clients claim the procedure has minimal discomfort associated with it, some areas are a little sensitive than others i.e. the forehead and upper lip.

Potenza applies 1-2 passes and Morpheus8 applies approximately 1-3 passes. Potenza is able to get fantastic results with fewer passes and without applying too much pressure thanks to its customisable and controlled impact. This means the hand piece kisses the skin rather than the technician having to apply pressure for maximum depth. This also means the settings that have been chosen are more accurate and more comfortable.

Contraindications

There will be some contraindications such as medications, health conditions such as autoimmune conditions that will need to be discussed before going ahead with either treatment. Both devices are suitable for all skin and fitzpatrick types. When using the monopolar mode with Potenza it is important that we do not treat patients who have metal pins and plates, pacemakers and medication releasing implants, although this doesn't mean the patient cannot have the treatment altogether though, as there is the option of bipolar.

Treatment Experience

Potenza delivers greater results all round with excellent patient feedback and satisfaction. This is down to the precision of the treatment as well as the variable customisation. Most clients see results within 2 treatments however with Morpheus8, it could take up to 4 for comparable results.

Downtime

Downtime is very similar for both Potenza and Morpheus8. Across both treatments patients may experience redness, swelling and mild irritation for up to 72 hours. Most patients are able to return to normal activities within 2 days and wear light mineral make up after 24 hours.

Why We Recommend Potenza RF Microneedling at Clinica Lase

At Clinica Lase, we prefer Potenza RF because it offers more customisation than Morpheus8, which is limited to a single mode.

We are also renowned for our cutting edge laser devices and although we had offered microneedling for years, we knew our clients would be thrilled with the results from Potenza.

It's been fantastic to be able to offer Potenza to our clientele who are always looking for non-invasive treatments to slow down the clock and vastly illuminate the skin, without the downtime and discomfort of aggressive lasers. In particular we were missing something to tighten the skin and Potenza really fits the bill. We find most clients almost always want to treat the neck area especially as this is an area which can show signs of ageing and loss of elasticity.

Understanding the uniqueness of each individual's skin, it's crucial to recognise that there is no one-size-fits-all solution when it comes to skin care. Treatment plans should be meticulously tailored, considering factors such as skin type, specific conditions, and the outcomes you're aiming for. Whether you're dealing with sensitive skin, acne, signs of ageing, or any other concern, a personalised approach ensures that you receive the most effective and safe treatments.

At Clinica Lase, we pride ourselves on our commitment to personalised care.
