Common Questions about Acne Scar Removal

Acne can cause scarring in some people due to a variety of factors, including:

  • Inflammation for an extended period of time
  • Picking
  • Squeezing
  • Popping
  • Drying the skin out too much
  • Not treating acne when it begins
  • Genetics

Acne scarring can be pink/red (post inflammatory erythema) and some will be brown (Post inflammatory hyperpigmentation) in colour or they may have no color.

There are different types of acne scarring based on the scars shape.

  • Icepick - narrow, deep scars.
  • Rolling - wide, with a sloping edge. Similar to an upside down hill.
  • Boxcar - wide, round and have distinct edges.
  • Keloid - this will grow taller and larger than the lesion was.
  • Hypertrophic - unraised and the same shape as the lesion was.

Generally the colour of scarring (Post inflammatory hyperpigmentation and/or Post inflammatory erythema) will fade over time, this can take several months to a year, however it will differ between each person.

The depth of scars will not change on their own.

Depending on the nature of the acne scars, we have a range of acne scar treatments that can be performed.

To remove the colour of the scar we can use:

To reduce the indentation of the scars we can perform:

As our clinicians are highly trained we will often do a combination of these treatments to get the best outcomes.

It depends. There are a lot of of varying factors here, but with the right treatments, acne scars can be improved immensely.

Keloid scars from acne will need to be assessed by a dermatologist prior to treatment as treatment can stimulate these scars.

Again, this is highly dependent on the type of acne scarring and the colour of the scars.

To remove the colour of the scar we can use:

To reduce the indentation of the scars we can perform:

Because the treatments needed will vary, we will always require a skin consultation before making a recommendation. Our clinicians are highly trained and may recommend a combination of these treatments to get the best outcomes to reduce your acne scars.

Because acne scarring has some depth to it, some in-clinic treatments are usually recommended, though there are also skincare products that can help reduce the appearance of acne scars.

Retinol and some AHA acids can help to stimulate the skin's collagen, elastin and cell turnover. This can help to minimise the appearance of scars.

These ingredients can be found in products such as:

Pigment inhibiting ingredients, such as alpha-arbutin and tranexamic acid.  can help to reduce the colour in acne scars.

Vitamin C can help to reduce the colour of acne scars, however it will not change the texture of these scars.
