Broken Capillaries or Spider Veins (Telangiectasias)

Broken capillaries, often referred to as spider veins, are tiny damaged veins visible on the skin's surface. They usually appear as fine red, blue, or purple lines prominently on the face and legs.

While they're usually harmless and don't cause discomfort, many people opt for laser treatment for broken capillaries due to aesthetic concerns. Spider veins can result from sun damage, underlying health conditions, and environmental stress, with women being more commonly affected than men.

Common Questions About Spider Veins

Spider veins are red or pink, thin lines that appear on the surface of our skin. They can resemble a spider's web and are caused by broken capillaries.

Broken capillaries tend to be hereditary and occur more often in those with a strong family history. In saying that, there are a number of factors that can increase your chance of developing broken capillaries throughout your lifetime. These may include:

  • Ageing
  • Pregnancy
  • Smoking
  • Weight
  • Sun damage
  • Medications
  • Standing for long periods of time- The continuous stress on the heart to pump blood to the legs and back up the body whilst fighting against the force of gravity can cause veins to fill up with blood.

Yes! The latest and most effective method for removing broken capillaries and spider veins is with medical grade laser treatments. The laser is absorbed by blood cells in the veins. The heat from the laser coagulates and destroys the blood vessels, causing the veins to shrink and eventually be taken away via the lymphatic system as waste.

At Clinica Lase we have multiple treatment options for broken capillaries on the face. The best treatment for your skin will be chosen by your Dermal Clinician during a thorough consultation. Treatment options are dependent on the type of capillaries, the colour of your skin and medications and health conditions, but include our Excel V Nd:YAG laser and the Limelight IPL.

We require consultation before any broken capillary treatment as there are multiple devices used to treat capillaries and different factors that will alter this such as: skin color, size of the capillaries, location on the body.

All areas of the body, our Dermal Clinicians are well versed in a range of body areas, most commonly the ankles, upper and lower legs, chest, neck and face.

Depending on the location and the size of the capillaries they can take 1-10 days to heal.

Our Clinicians generally recommend 1-3 treatments for broken capillaries, however this will be altered from person to person and dependent on health conditions, medication, lifestyle factors and hereditary factors.

Depending on the type of broken capillaries, IPL and laser both have their place. IPL is great for tiny little vessels that cover an area, whilst laser is best for deeper, larger vessels as it can target them more directly. Your Dermal Clinician will be able to guide you through this during your consultation.

Pricing is on a case by case basis to ensure that each bespoke treatment is priced appropriately. Therefore, a quote will be given during consultation with no obligation to continue with treatment. Pricing starts at $75.
