Chemical Peels for Men

Did you know that chemical peels are also great for men? Truly, chemical peels are great for anyone who wants to refine their skin texture and improve skin clarity.

In our experience, many men find chemical peels helpful for clearing oily, congested skin. Chemical peels can also provide much-needed hydration, brighten pigmentation, improve pore size, and reduce the appearance of lines.  In other words, these treatments can improve the way your skin looks and feels, leaving you feeling great.

Why are chemical peels great for men?

Like women, men also face skin concerns and can benefit from the rejuvenating effects of chemical peels.

Improves Skin Texture and Tone

Chemical peels can help in improving the texture and tone of the skin by removing the outermost layers of dead skin cells. This exfoliation promotes the growth of new, healthy skin cells and can make the skin smoother.

Reduces Acne and Acne Scarring

Men, like women, can suffer from acne. Chemical peels can reduce the appearance of acne scars and even prevent future acne by cleaning out clogged pores.

Reduces Signs of Ageing

Chemical peels can reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, which are common signs of ageing. Scheduling this treatment regularly can help men maintain a more youthful appearance.

Helps to Treat Sun Damage

Men who aren't diligent with sunscreen may have concerns related to sun damage, especially if they work outside every day. Chemical peels can help in treating such sun damage and reducing the appearance of dark spots and hyperpigmentation.

Improves Shaving Experience

By exfoliating the skin and removing dead skin cells, chemical peels can actually lead to a smoother surface for shaving. This means dealing with fewer ingrown hairs and a more comfortable shaving experience overall.

Enhanced Product Penetration

After a chemical peel, skincare products such as moisturisers and serums can be absorbed more effectively. All those dead skin cells that might block absorption will be gone, allowing products to penetrate and hydrate your skin even better than before.

Boosts Confidence

Having clear, youthful, and radiant skin can also be a boost to a man's self-confidence. When you feel good about your appearance, it can positively impact many aspects of your life.

What skin concerns are chemical peels helpful in treating?

Men’s skin will have similar concerns to anyone else. Peels can help address hyperpigmentation, congestion, fine lines, open pores, skin dehydration, excess oil flow and skin texture. Chemical peels can also improve acne scarring and treat sun damaged skin.

What kinds of chemical peels are popular for men?

A lot of men that we treat in the clinic tend to have thickened oily skin and quite often work outside. Peels that are salicylic based will help clear out congestion and help balance oil flow and can help lift pigmentation.

Other popular chemical peels for men include lactic based peels, TCA and glycolic peels. These are always individually selected depending on the skin we are treating and relevant downtime.

What exactly happens during a chemical peel treatment?

The skin is thoroughly cleansed and degreased to allow peel penetration. The clinician will also check that the skin’s barrier is intact and that a peel is a suitable treatment to be done on the day. We will always do a consultation prior to ensure the appropriate peel is being selected and discuss any expected downtime.

The chemical peel is then applied for the appropriate amount of time and then depending on the peel either left on or removed with neutraliser. The treatment is often combined with other modalities depending on your specific concerns.

How long does the treatment take?

The chemical peel itself will usually take around 10-15 minutes however they are usually part of either a medi facial or a laser treatment which would take 60-75 minutes.

Will a chemical peel disrupt my beard growth and should I shave my face before a chemical peel?

Chemical peels would not affect hair growth. We would normally recommend shaving the day before treatment rather than on the same day to avoid irritation.

Can I get a chemical peel if I currently have a beard?

If you have a beard and would like to avoid shaving it off we can still apply the peel to the rest of your face.

Do I need to postpone a chemical peel if I have nicked myself shaving recently?

We can still apply the peel but would avoid the affected area.

How soon can I shave after getting a chemical peel?

This will depend on the strength of the peel that is done but anything from the following day to 7 days depending on how much peeling is likely to occur.

Is there different chemical peel aftercare for men?

Aftercare would generally be the same for men as for women and would be specific to the peel performed. Extra care for outdoor workers to avoid sun exposure and keep the skin well protected.

Is there anything I should avoid after a chemical peel?

Avoid sun exposure for 2 weeks post treatment, wear plenty of SPF, hat and sunglasses when outside. Avoid using active skincare or any exfoliation for 3-5 days. Avoid heat or excessive exercise for 24-48 hours post treatment.

How quickly will I see results after a chemical peel?

There is usually an immediate effect with a lot of peels in terms of skin glow and hydration. If there is any peeling, the best effects would be after that is resolved. Skin peels will also stimulate collagen which is a long term result which would be expected around 3 months post treatment.
